MISSISSIPPI ABORTIONS DECLINE . . .

A 1992 state law in Mississippi, which mandates a 24-hour waiting period prior to the performance of a surgical abortion, has resulted in a decrease in the number of abortions. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, the abortion rate in Mississippi declined 15.5% during the first 12 months the law was in effect. Compared with Georgia and South Carolina, which do not have such laws, Mississippi's rate declined 14% and 12% more, respectively. SEX ON TV . . .

Marion Howard, researcher at Emory University, reports that "ninety-four percent of sex on TV is among people who aren't married to each other." Everything children see on TV says that sex isn't only for marriage. This contributes to children's widespread confusion about marriage. Many children learn that marriage isn't forever based on their experience with divorce on the part of their parents and/or other adults in their lives. [WORLD, 5/3/ - 6/7/97, p 22]

GLOBAL WARMING MYTH . . .

Americans are being told that if "global warming" is not controlled, the polar ice cap will melt, sea levels will rise, cities will sink under water, severe storms, floods, and drought will increase on every continent on earth, and wildlife will be destroyed. The "global warming" threat, according to environmentalist, occurs when carbon dioxide, which is the byproduct of the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, is trapped in the atmosphere, as in a greenhouse. This trapped carbon dioxide, along with sunlight, then causes a gradual rise in the Earth's temperature. [1 -- Pat Buchanan, The Washington Times, National Weekly Edition, 10/19/97, p31]

Clinton's Solution: Emissions of carbon dioxide must be cut! And, because the U.S. consumes 22% of the world's fossil fuels, America must make the greatest sacrifice to eliminate the danger of global warming. At a December climate summit in Kyoto, Japan, Europeans are going to demand that industrial nations sign the Climate Change Protocol treaty, agreeing to cut their carbon dioxide emissions by the year 2010 to 15 percent below what they were in 1990 -- in other words, the energy growth since 1990 would be rolled back, plus 15 percent more in just twelve years. [2 -- The DeWeese Report, American Policy Center, 10/97, p 3 - 703/925-0881] Although the U.S. Senate recently passed a resolution, 95-0, rejecting the Climate Change Protocol mandates, President Clinton is expected to sign this legally-binding United Nations treaty.

"Global Warming" Is A Myth:

1) There is no scientific consensus that "global warming" is even taking place. Since 1870, the Earth's temperature has risen one-half of 1 degree Celsius, and most of this rise occurred before World War II. [1 - p 31]

2) Since 1979, scientific research through U.S. Government satellite and balloon measurements shows that the earth's temperature is actually cooling -- very slightly -- .307 degrees Celsius. [2 -- p 1]

3) Of the 200 billion tons of carbon dioxide released annually into the atmosphere, 95 percent is the work of nature, only 5 percent the work of man. "Mankind's contribution to any global warming is thus inconsequential." [1 -- Pat Buchanan, p 31]

4) If indeed, there has been any warming, it is well within the natural range of temperature variations over the past 15,000 years. And most of it occurred prior to 1970, before most human-caused carbon dioxide emissions. [3 -- William Rusher, "Global warming is old, old story, Christian Chronicle, 10/15/97, p 11]

5) The polar ice cap is melting, but it has been melting for about a million years or so -- this is not a recent event. [2-- p 1] 5) Recent severe weather, i.e., hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and droughts can be attributed to a natural phenomenon, called El Nino, which is completely natural and has been wreaking havoc across the globe for centuries [2 -- p 1]

6) A Gallup Poll of the members of the Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Society reveals that only 17 percent of them think that global warming in the 20th century has been caused by greenhouse gas emissions. [3 -- p 11]

7) A United Nation's report on global warming deleted the following two paragraphs in the final draft:
a) "none of the studies cited above has shown clear evidence that we can attribute the observed climate changes to increases in greenhouse gases."
b) "no study to date has positively attributed all or part of the climate change to ...man-made causes." [2 -- p 2]

Economic Costs Of This Treaty:
In order to comply with the Climate Change Protocol, and cut U.S. emissions, the Federal government will have to levy a heavy tax on energy consumption. This massive energy tax:
1) could drive up the cost of heating your home by as much as 30 to 40 percent [2 -- p 8];
2) could increase the tax on gasoline as much as 60 cents per gallon [2 -- p8];
3) could cost the U.S. over one million jobs, with some estimates predicting the loss of over seven million jobs in 14 years, sending our economy into a tailspin [2 -- p 8]. A study by the Department of Energy's Argonne Laboratory reports that the treaty will cripple six U.S. industries, including paper, steel, petroleum, refining, chemical manufacturing, aluminum and cement. [2 -- p 8] These punitive costs will eventually drive up the cost of modern living so that Americans will be forced to drastically change their lifestyles. According to Rep. Bill Paxon (NY) energy taxes "would cause untold pain to the most vulnerable in our economy -- from the working poor facing higher transportation costs to the fixed-income elderly who struggle even today to pay their heating bills."
[5 -- The Washington Times, National Weekly Edition, 10/19/97, p3]

Other Problems With This Treaty:
Only developed industrial nations will be bound by this treaty. Because the undeveloped Third-World nations will not be bound by this treaty, they will be free to produce whatever they want, causing a redistribution of the United States' wealth. In addition, hidden in the small print of the treaty is a provision that calls for the "harmonizing of patent laws". [2 -- p 8] Although this provision has nothing to do with protecting the environment, it will rob Americans of their right to have their inventions protected.
